I wanted to use it to learn Kannada from Hindi, but the app has many issues, making it unsuitable for that purpose: 1. It contains many translation errors. 2. Sometimes the text and the pronunciation don't match. 3. There are no explanations. It just has drills for memorizing words. The UI is good, though. - Duolingo: Language Lessons 2★
My opinion of the app has been dropping a lot lately. Removing the sentence discussions has been a huge loss. I made heavy use of those to understand mistakes or sentences I didn't quite get. Now, many mistakes leave you confused and with no explanation or way to figure out what you did wrong. Overall, Duolingo is not a bad app for supplementing language learning. I used to love this app. I've been using it for over a year, but they've disabled "practice to earn more hearts" in the free version. I thought it was a random bug, but it's happened to a couple of my friends with long streaks too. I think it's their way of getting people to do the paid version. We've all sent in bug reports but havent received any responses and theres nothing on the website. It's been a couple months. I was always on the fence if I wanted to keep doing this game. While I was learning words and general sentence structure, I never felt confident actually speaking Spanish. now they changed the game. before you lost hearts if you get an answer wrong. now instead of hearts,energy which can be lost just for answering a question, you can run out of energy mid game even when answering correctly, causing you to pay in jewels to keep playing or exit out. this seems like a good time to find another app. - Duolingo: Language Lessons 2★
Purchased an annual subscription for this and regretting. New higher tier subscription came out since and I'm constantly nagged to updated. The whole trophy system is just silly and greatly flawed. Lessons don't scale in difficulty linearly. It goes from 0-60 quite quickly. Duolingo definitely helped at first, but I didn't need the premium version to get there, and now it's lessons are just too difficult and there is no bridge. I do not like that you can no longer do a practice session when you run out of hearts to try to keep your streak going. Super Duolingo is incredibly expensive and entirely out of my budget so I relied on that to be able to avoid using up my streak freezes. Now I have to watch a video about Super to gain a single heart. Maybe if you didn't ask for my card for the FREE trial of super I would give that week long trial a chance, but not having you automatically start charging me what I can't afford! - Duolingo: Language Lessons 2★
I'm actually a little surprised with how popular this app is. I'm gonna guess it's because of Duolingo's presence on social media, because honestly, this isn't that good. It uses AI for it's lessons, which sometimes results in sentences that aren't even grammatically correct. Overall, I think this would be great for learning to READ a language, not speak it, since it doesn't do a good job at teaching accents (which are in almost every language). - Duolingo: Language Lessons 2★
used to be good, now it's just becoming overrun with AI garbage & saying incorrect sentences are correct, and vice versa. it has you practice the same vocab words all the time, even if you don't have any issues with those specific words. only reason I stuck around this long was because I could use the free version & it reminded me to practice daily. More frustrating than helpful. At first I enjoyed the practice, but ran out of energy too fast. I subscribed, and thought I could get my family to learn with me. Nope. Then started the challenges. They are far too short and this is only unit 1 and 2. To top it off, it rarely registers short sounds, and no matter how close you say some words, it won't register. I've left comments to no avail. The app has not been counting my lessons towards my streaks for some time now. I will do a lesson in the morning that will give me my streak and then by the time I get off work that same day the app is telling me to do more lessons or lose my streak. Now the app has glitched and not counted three days of lessons. My streak protect is full so even if I missed three days of lessons I wouldn't have lost my streak. While I do enjoy the explanation that is given in the alphabet and vocabulary, it is disappointing that they use AI for their images. I can't say on the actual language lessons, which is why I quit Duo. I wish they didn't use AI and actually hired real artists, I'm just worried that instead of human translators, AI may be used as well. if you want a better review, get rid of genai and pay people. - Airlearn - Language Learning 2★
I paid for this app and cannot recommend it. They are selling an incompleted product. Customer service never responds to messages - ever. The format is fun and straightforward to follow. You can never finish because they have a message at the furthest you can go saying they are adding more so that is unsatisfying. it was good at first, until when the next day came for my lessons, everything stopped working? it kept saying error, I had really high hopes for this app. I was doing really good and getting decent grades. it's really helpful for context in sentences- and you get to learn the pronunciation easier which helps me! if you can,please fix this glitch, overall decent app with a few bugs. - Airlearn - Language Learning 2★
The following pertains to the Russian course. Great concept, and I did actually learn a lot about the Russian case system. However, the further you get into the course the more errors start popping up. They will explain a grammatical concept and get it backwards later on, or the wrong answer will be correct, or definitions of words will be switched. I like the app, it's very good, but PLEASE don't use AI imagery when there's real art on the app. It feels like a punch in the face to all artists. Also, as another reviewer has said, makes the course seem to also be AI-generated. Gonna update this and say: you can use the cat to depict most situations. It doesn't need to look realistic... Good for beginners but I've noticed a few mistakes here and there; not worth it for advanced learners. There's a huge bug in the second to last section of the Chinese course that doesn't allow any correct answers and prevents users from continuing further. I like the extra info it adds here and there but this is basically a worse duolingo bc it does not allow pre placement if you aren't a beginner, and the stats are inaccurate. I really want to like it but I can't sign up for the free trial or the annual subscription. the lessons are super simple so I'd like to go ahead and try it/buy it but it just says billing closed. It's less repetitive than duo lingo and maybe a tiny bit more aesthetic but they don't have Mexico Spanish... only Spain while duo has both. Still on the fence. As of July 2026: The app seems fine at first but struggles to hear what I am saying in guided conversations. It went from working, to mishearing 1 word, to completely missing the entire sentence. I have the free trial so I'll keep at it for now but, a personal gripe is that it doesn't exactly teach you what the words are, it just tells you what they mean in that order (flashcards). Example being "mas o menos" (more or less). I'd like to understand this as such rather than "I'm ok". - Speak: Language Learning 2★
I was super impressed with this app, but then after the trial ended and I started paying for it (which I thought was worth it based on the trial) it suddenly can't understand a damn thing I'm saying, and is consistently asking me to correct my mistakes when I said the exact same thing it's asking me to. Why does it transcribe my speech as Hungarian or whatever when we were speaking Japanese? And it doesn't let you fix/delete your sentence either. Breaks up the conversation flow. I'm not too interested in the "repeat after me" exercises since I already got Duolingo for that; I'm mainly looking for an AI to chat with. But this one is super buggy. Slow and unresponsive on new S25 Ultra. took more than a minute to turn on the mic to allow me to speak the prompted word or phrase. Also... asks for far too much access that isn't needed for what it does. it wants direct access to Bluetooth devices and other data it doesn't need. The app and method for learning languages is great but it's absolutely ridiculous that you only get one lesson for free and then you have to pay. The whole first unit couldn't be free? Then the monthly subscription is more than what you pay for most streaming services. For an app that's mostly AI it should be way cheaper. While it's a great app for learning languages teaching you pronunciation and getting straight onto speaking and learning you can't actually learn a language for free, you get an idea of what you could get with the app with one lesson but when you try to do another it asks for a subscription. This app is not free and I wish that they were more upfront about that. You must pay a subscription to continue after the first lesson set of free lessons. I was going to use this app to help me learn Korean but I'm already paying for Talk to me in Korean. The Korean lessons that I was able to do were a bit fast paced for a complete beginner and the font style used by the app makes it difficult to decipher some of the Korean characters. - Speak: Language Learning 2★
Was great until I logged in for my daily lesson, and saw it's now subscription based. I can only do the beginning lesson then the rest is locked. I'm not too upset because I have 4 other apps for leaning Korean, but it's still kind of sad. A great substitute for this app would be Drops and Teuida. I wish more apps were like Duolingo where you have to endure ads or you could choose to pay. This app would be amazing if there were a free option. Language learning should not be open to elite only who have money to pay for things. Very disappointing just how expensive these kinds of apps are. So far not too bad. Constant ads for subscription. Easily dismissed/non-lengthy. It's nice to try conversation, yet Im constantly disconnected. The app doesn't pick up my speed - making me intentionally slow down and sound phonetic rather than fluent - causing me to "fail" or it entirely misses words. I do wish the voices sounded more native. Many sound Latin/Asian, a minority for Germany. Word/phrase selection feels erratic and a bit too formal. I appreciate the grammar breakdowns and immediately useful learnings, but the app is terrible when it comes to listening and grading spoken language, at least for French. my pronunciation is by no means perfect, but 1/4 of the time words are accepted and 3/4 they're marked wrong. lesson 1 - randomly switching between two different words for juice - showing in English and I say Spanish, so I don't know which one they want. Good for practicing pronunciation, but not enough other methods to ensure learning. After several lessons, I have a few complaints. While it's not hard to understand the words, the app has a hard time hearing when I speak back. it won't recognize what I say so I have to keep repeating many times until it decides to accept that I'm saying the words correctly. And a couple of times, it accepted words I know I said wrong. It also does not explain everything, it just give you words, so when I went to my word list, it said I had learned words I had not.
